How long have you been in your industry?almost 20 years
Why did you choose your industry?I grew my business from a payment processing company when I started the business in 2005 to a coaching & consulting practice along with a marketing agency back in 2018 when I rebranded the company from Credit Cards, NJ to Business Growth Strategies International. Today, BGSI has multiple brands all designed to help our clients get more leads, opportunities, and revenues.
Who are your typical clients?Small business owners looking to grow their business.
What do you like best about being in this industry?Seeing the impactful results that my clients get when working with us and how their communities are better off after they start working with me because they now have more money coming in, leading to more hires, more donations and an overall better connection with their respective communities.
What are common problems you see? From the clients' perspective, there have been a lot of people who "read a book" and hang a shingle saying they're a coach but have no idea what to do and then burn many clients. From my perspective, and similar to the clients' viewpoint, there are a lot of bad apples. But the other part is that too many people think they know better and refuse to ask for help
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Be open to trying something that scares you and challenges you. As the saying goes, you cannot change if you never leave your comfort zone!
When is your busy season?year-round
What keeps you up at night?Wanting to do more to help more people
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I am constantly out there speaking to groups - large and small - on ways they can "Ditch the Expensive Marketing; Generate Customers On-Demand Without Expensive Ads" - as a way to help them get more leads and revenues without relying on paying for marketing that doesn't work
How involved are you in the community?I sit on many boards and commissions including being VP of my chamber of commerce now for 14 or 15 years and many other organizations in town and globally designed to help people get more opportunities. I am also a pro-bono mentor for two organizations helping entrepreneurs with their marketing.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?St Jude's Childrens Hospital. There's something about kids dying from diseases that hits to my very core and I have been partnering with St Jude for quite a while in various ways to drive donations their way including a call when I started writing my novel where I asked people if they wanted their name to be included in the book, they had to make a donation to St Jude.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Understand the business world first and make sure that you coach others on a pro-bono basis before trying to get paid to do it so you see how things really work and understand that coaching is not always the silver bullet and take everything for granted.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?News & Politics! Those are my vices :) But in all seriousness, I hang out with friends and family and pay attention to other ways I can still be helping in the community
