How long have you been in your industry?25 years
Why did you choose your industry?I've been through several job searches myself and my marketing background has always enabled me to find my next opportunity rather quickly. I understand the toll that a job search can take on an individual and their family so this was an opportunity for me to make a sizaable contribution to those in need.
Who are your typical clients?Anyone who is employed or unemployed looking for a new career opportunity, regardless of their age, level of experience or industry... all of my coaching methods can be applied immediately and effectively to another who's in a job search.
What do you like best about being in this industry? This is a chance to change an individual's life for the better. This is the most rewarding job I've ever had.
What are common problems you see?One of the biggest problems within the job search coaching industry is the fact that 99% of the coaches don't have a "marketing" background... most of them have grown up in HR or talent recruitment and that's not very valuable to a job seeker. The job search is all about positioning, packaging, messaging, and targeting. The marketing of job seekers is how you create great visibility & engagement.
What advice/tips do you have for clients?Be willing to experiment and take chances and embrace my trademarked "What the Hell Approach to Job Search.
When is your busy season? It's always busy. Even with unemployment rates at 4%, there are always going to be a large population of very talented individuals who are out of work.
What keeps you up at night? The opportunity to make a very positive impact on people's lives.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business?I utilize the LinkedIn platform to promote my perspectives... my 30K LinkedIn connections... email marketing... newsletters... videos... lots of referral business (my 12K NSENG members)...
How involved are you in the community?I have created a group of 12,000 job seekers across the country, 9,000 of which are located in the greater Chicago area. I have helped over 3,000 individuals to get re-employed through my job search resources and coaching services.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?American Cancer Society
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Build up a community and a reputation before you try to build a coaching practice... this is where many coaches fail because they don't have a significant following and are always hunting their next client.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?International travel... golf... biking... fantasy football... jazz clubs... comedy clubs
